Vassar-Wesleyan in Madrid (VWM) is committed to helping our students advance their education while benefiting from a cross-cultural immersion experience and improving language skills in a Spanish university setting. The VWM Consortium considers language learning, cultural immersion, and social integration the primary goals of a study abroad experience. And the program committee works to ensure that program participants achieve them. This committee includes members of the administration and faculty from the two sponsors (Vassar and Wesleyan) and meets yearly, usually in April, to review the program and to discuss new initiatives. In formulating its policies, the committee is guided by the Resident Directors’ reports, by the observations of committee members who visit Madrid during the year, and by student evaluations.
An educational experience based on total immersion in a foreign environment is as exciting and rewarding as it is challenging. The challenges can be cheerfully met as students gain a deeper understanding of the Spanish way of life and learn to appreciate different ways of doing things. The role of the program staff and the purpose of this website are to facilitate this understanding, and to help students become resourceful and independent and profit fully from their experience in Spain.
